Today, I created my own writing website using Notion—a great start. Just as I typed in today's date, I realized it was a very special day for Chinese. I added a chrysanthemum icon because it means "do not forget those who change you“.

😵💫 The story keeps undergoing adjustments. I even considered moving the setting from an unfamiliar small island in the South Pacific to Dali, China, as I am more familiar with Chinese scenes. However, considering that this book will primarily be published abroad, I decided to stick with my South Pacific island. I need to gather more material about this kind of setting, different cultural backgrounds, and their possible ways of thinking. Although I have some understanding of these characters, bringing the2024、m to life requires much more effort than I initially imagined. It involves constantly imagining these scenes and characters, then making them interact along a storyline, creating each small climax, and eventually forming a novel.

🫙 I bought a coffee for 4 CAD. Sitting in the sunshine, I watched some YouTube travel videos and read Wikipedia articles about Samoa, seeking inspiration. Without real-world details and empathy for the characters, a novel becomes dull and preachy, and no one will want to read it, including me. DON’T START UNTIL YOU GOT THE REAL STORY. I watch their faces, begging, “Pls , tell me your story…”

🫄 More and more details and images jump out when the story is playing in my mind recently. I need to catch them and mark them in my Notion. Yes, bone first, then some muscles, and then blood vessels…. Exactly like pregnancy.

🤠 How many words should I type for one chapter….
I went through some novels in the library and did some calculations. A novel with dimensions 15202 cm typically has 12 chapters, with each chapter averaging 8,000 words in English. According to the 1.2-1.5 translation ratio between Chinese and English, each chapter would be between 5,400 and 6,700 Chinese characters. In other words, my target for each chapter is 6,000 Chinese characters.

🤠 Start writing down all the thoughts and images in your mind, no matter how trivial or messy they seem, just get them on paper.

🤠 While scrolling through posts in a Facebook writers' group, I explored their views on AI and publishing platforms. It seems clear that making money from writing isn't something to set high expectations for; there are many pitfalls. Many authors feel angry and violated by AI-assisted writing, but I believe this trend is inevitable. If there comes a day when I can tell an AI, "I want to read a novel about a Mars journey with romance and battles," and it generates one instantly for free, constantly adapting to my preferences, would I choose a human-written or AI-written book? This question boils down to the purpose of my reading. Is it to experience the author's thoughts or just for quick sensory thrills? I must admit, the latter is the goal for many readers, leading to what's known as "quick reads." This is market demand and the choice for making money. Therefore, the decision to use AI ultimately depends on the author's writing purpose: who are you writing for?
